The TVNZ Kiwi and his friend the Cat represent a piece of classic Kiwiana. For thirteen years, the TVNZ Kiwi marked the end of television broadcasting for the night, earning him the nickname Goodnight Kiwi. Each night, the minute-long animation showed the Goodnight Kiwi and his friend the Cat shutting down the screens in the master control room. The TVNZ Kiwi then puts out the lights, leaves an empty milk bottle out on the front porch and locks the door before riding an elevator up the transmission mast to bed in a satellite dish. The Cat curls up on the Goodnight Kiwi’s feet as the animation ends.
